plogging: the 1% movement for the philippines
the video features the ambitious 1% movement for the philippines. our organization, today’s journey, leads this initiative. it aims to reach at least 1% of the 43 million filipino youth. we want to encourage them to do plogging across the country once a week. with this, they help address environmental problems such as chest-high flooding and improper waste disposal.
plogging means jogging while picking up litter. this promotes a healthy body and a healthy environment. the philippines generates around 2.7 million tons of plastic waste every year.. over the past decades, this waste has contributed to devastating flooding and adds to the destruction brought by typhoons.
the 1% movement is on a positive trajectory as more volunteers are joining. from 8 ploggers when we launched it, we have over a hundred today. we continue striving to reach more people.
we segregate the waste we collect, separating plastics for resale and recycling. we use creativity to transform some of them into crafts like pen holders. we use the funds we raised to purchase solar lights and materials for micro-hydropower systems. we donate them to communities in remote areas.
data cited in video:
“40,000 tons of all solid waste daily“
