beginning in 2008, residents of broome county in upstate new york spent years advocating for a ban on hydraulic fracking at both the local and state level. a coalition of community members from binghamton, a city in broome county, worked together to fight for the health of new yorkers and of the natural environment. co-founder of the new york energy democracy alliance adam flint spearheaded this grassroots anti-fracking campaign alongside local activists and politicians.

in 2014, new york state governor andrew cuomo implemented a ban on hydraulic fracking. while this served as a major victory for the environmental activists from broome, a future of independence from fossil fuels continues to be fought for today.
