my name is micah seidel, i am a sophomore at rutgers university studying biological sciences and i plan to graduate in 2026. i am also a documentary filmmaker. i co-directed fields of devotion, a documentary about scientists breeding disease resistant plants for new jersey farmers, and life on the edge, a short documentary following researchers as they investigate the relationship between oyster farms, horseshoe crabs and migratory birds in the local delaware bay ecosystem.

scientific research is necessary to develop food systems that can sustain healthy and affordable food production while maintaining a healthy ecosystem. i want to tell stories that engage people in important topics that typically are not talked about, such as food system sustainability, and help communicate solutions to sustainability issues. in the summer of 2022 i had the fortunate opportunity to join a rutgers science team in the fsm while they conducted food system research in partnership with local leaders. while there i was able to document aspects of the local food system.
